Fred Rogers was a puppeteer. A minister. A musician. An educator. And of course, a neighbor. For the generations who grew up with Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, he is today an emblem of an earlier, simpler time. His words evoke a powerful nostalgia. But the ideas he advocated are astonishingly current and far from simple. Beneath his direct and plainspoken demeanor lay beliefs that were far ahead of their time. Today they are radical and even more essential. He was an environmentalist, a vegetarian, a feminist, and a pacifist. He used the pulpit of television to explore animal rights, gay rights, and civil rights. He never proselytized but rather taught by example - nearly every day for 33 years - a code of radical civility and unflinching kindness.
