Food and Country

In the first days of Covid-19, Ruth Reichl—the amazing and endlessly curious former NY Times food critic and possibly the most respected voice defining American food culture —quickly grasps the pandemic’s potentially devastating effects on American food security and culinary culture. She becomes obsessed with the fate of the food supply chain. How will the country feed itself? How will suppliers on all points in the chain sustain their livelihoods? How will the little guys survive? When the pandemic recedes, will we be left with only Big Ag and chain restaurants? As the days turn into weeks and months, Ruth opens her rolodex and takes to Zoom to talk to an extraordinary cast of characters--from ranchers and farmers to fishermen and world-class chefs on the front lines of the food system.

Untitled Food Landscape is Ruth Reichl’s journey of discovery as she re-thinks much of what she thought she knew about American food. At the same time it’s the story of eight extraordinary characters she’s rooting for as they fight to save their businesses and communities from ruin. The camera invites us into Ruth's baldly honest and emotional video conversations and also breaks free to join these folks on the ground at their independent farms, ranches, and restaurants in Ohio, Georgia, Kansas, New York, and California. With Reichl as our guide, an urgent, kinetic and kaleidoscopic portrait of American reinvention emerges.
